March is dedicated to raising awareness of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT),
a medical problem that occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein,
usually in the leg, and partly or completely blocks circulation.
This complication causes an estimated 60,000 to 200,000 deaths each year.
Yet three quarters of those surveyed by the American Public Health Association
had little or no awareness of what DVT is.
